Writing in first person means using I. Basically as you would speak. "I am stuck"
Past tense is things that have happened.

Simple past would be: I hid the toy from my brother.
Progressive past would be: I was hiding the toy when my brother came into the room.
Past Perfect would be: I thought I had hidden the toy better than I did.
Past Perfect Progressive would be: I had been hiding the toy when my brother entered the room.

Good luck!
