I'm not quite sure why they've said that. The only reason they tend to say to start it at anytime after your period has started is to ensure that you arent pregnant when you start the pill. Your doctor probably said to start it on the 5th day afterwards to let you have a full period rather than cutting it short since most women's flow starts to lessen or stop around then. When you take the pill what you are doing is giving yourself hormones or hormone like substances to trick your body into thinking that you're in a different point in your cycle than you really are. The "periods" that you get when you are on the pill aren't proper periods, it's withdrawal bleeding because the hormone levels drop, hence why it isnt detrimental to skip the sugar pills and just take the active pills some months. This also works the other way around. If you have just started your period taking the pill can cut it short depending on how long it takes to get the levels up in your body. As a rule of thumb it takes 7 days for it to be effective but the levels can be high enough earlier to stop your period. Thats the only reason I can think of that your doctor has told you to start them on the 5th day. If you have more questions why or dont get the answer you were after on here I'd suggest you talk to your doctor.
here's a site that will tell you more about that one:

I also have never heard of a pill that you start on your 5th day of your period. Yes there are different kinds of pills and I would research it a little more. I have been on the pill for many years and I start a new pack on the first Sunday after I start my period.
So, check with another doctor if you are unsure or even double check with your own doctor again. Find out more about the kind of pill you are on, maybe it does require you to start taking it at the time you were told. If not, ask your doctor and let him/her know what you have found out and maybe there was a mistake or mix-up. Doctors are human too and do make mistakes too.

Im on microgynon 30 and just take it for 21 days then 7 days break when your period comes then take it again for 21 days. Maybe as it is your first time taking it there is a better way of starting off on it so take it the 5 day after your period starts everyday for 21 days then that is your cycle and your periods should always fall on the same date. Hope that makes sense?????????????????????????????????

Look you doc is right. Make it clear in your mind. Suppose you are not taking pills & you want to start. Once again supose you period started on 1st no matter whether the bleeding has stopped or not you have to start the pill on day 5. After you finished your monthly dose of may be 27 tabs. you have to weight . your period will come next or day after next but you have to start taking pills on 7th day from the date you left the pill.

Just do what the doctor says, because within the next couple of weeks, your body will sync up with the pill anyway, no matter which day you started it.
Of course, it's effectiveness will be limited for the first three months while your body adjusts, so be sure to use back-up constraception.

Hi, I've just started the same pill, only two weeks ago, and I was told to take it on the first day of my period, I'd ask your doctor again, or read the instructions in your pill packet.
better safe than sorry eh...

The leaftlet should tell you when to start taking your first pack. Go by what it says on that because your GP could be mistaken, but the leaflet would be correct.
I would have thought first day of your period would be the time to start.

are you using it for contraception purposes? If so, this doesnt sound right or you misunderstood, maybe he means the day after your period ends. How long are they? If they are 4 days long this would work! Just call him up and ask him to clarify
