Social work can be a very rewarding career. It can also be very stressful as you are dealing with people's problems and issues. It's sometimes hard to distance yourself from the dire needs of others. I must say that it is a versatile major, though. You can choose an area that interests you - medicine, employment, housing, families, students, etc. and study that particular area when you go to school. Most reputable agencies will want a licensed social worker - like the gentleman said, this could take you as long as four-year undergraduate degree plus another year or so to get your license. If you are serious about helping people, this is truly the way to go. I applaud your interest in caring for others.
As far as beauty school is concerned, almost all major cities have a beauty academy that people attend. If they don't, then a local community college should have a program. If you're quite good, that might be a nice source of income for you while you're studying for your social work degree. The hours are flexible. After your receive your LSW degree, those working hours are usually 9-5 unless you are working with the homeless, addicts, people in nursing homes, etc. Those hours tend to be a little less traditional.
Good luck!

Well, you need to go to school for both. As for a social worker, you would be able to work in a nursing home, hospital, the social services department in your local government office, usually with families and children. Those are just some things you could do as a social worker. As for hours, it all may depend on where you work as one. Hospitals and nursing homes may require you to work "not-so-normal" hours like the 2nd or 3rd shift, weekends, and holidays. Jobs in more of a government setting like human/social services in your local courthouse may be more normal hours from mon-fri and may have more normal hours and maybe no weekends. There really are soo many different things you can do as a social worker that it all depends on what you decide to do and then hours may depend on that as well.

To become a social worker, you have to go to college and receive a master's degree - which altogether will take approximately 5-6 years. As for a beautician, you can get a license for that through your local community college.
Social work isn't necessarily what everyone thinks it is. Basically, it's finding resources for others that need it and helping them get what they need. For instance, helping those with finding insurance, funding for college, etc. You also do some counseling with social work.
The best thing to do would be to check out some university websites that you're interested in attending and research what their program is all about.

You could do hair during the weekends and nights and be a social worker during regular working hours. And, when you go crazy from all of the work, ya might have to hire your own personal social worker to give you therapy...LOL

I think you have to have a bachelor's degree in social science or psychology to become a social worker because you will be helping people with both psychological and financial problem and it requires a person with well-rounded knowledge. Sometimes you might be working with mentally disable people as well so you have to have lots of patience.

if you work hard you can actually go to beauty school part time while you are in undergrad and finish up in the summers. I knew a girl who went to beauty school while in her first year of undergrad and by her 2,3 and 4th years of undergard, she was able to earn extra money doing hair on campus in her spare time, plus she was a biology major. But anyway, I would really do my research about the social work degree because I heard they do not pay that well and they have long hours.
