When you say wireless is the only internet access you have, I'm assuming you mean you have a wireless receiver built in to your laptop, which is common equipment, that you can pick-up Wi-Fi signals with. If this is the case, you can't. To connect the two, you would need your own dedicated Internet connection, and a wireless router. Connect your incoming internet cable into the router, then plug your desktop into the router. The wireless signal will be broadcast through the router throughout your home and you can connect your laptop to it. Then all you have to do is setup a home network to share files between the two. Microsoft makes a wireless network "wizard" to help you you do this in the control panel.

How is the desktop connected to the internet?
If it's a high speed modem, you can add a wireless router.
If you only have dialup, you should have a place to plug in a phone line to the laptop.

the two borrow her modem or use an ethernet cable if she has a router. you ought to continually take your instant router, only ask her to login on the router config so it connects. different than which you would be able to attempt ICS (internet connection sharing) in spite of the undeniable fact that that's quite unreliable and many times would not artwork 50% of the time besides. in case you want to objective that, google it or something, that's too long to type alright here.

You need to turn on internet sharing on the laptop. It is true though that you need to connect the two of the computer together somehow. A router is going to be needed whichever way you look at it.
