Not trying to be mean but if you don't know what a defensive end is than you need to read all about football and the positions are. I am in the same exact position as you. I am going to start camp it a few weeks and i am trying out for TE and DE. For defensive end, you are placed at the end of the defensive line and you have to get through the offensive line to sack the QB obvious. you also might be called to cover a player. Again not trying to be mean, if you already know this stuff, but i am trying to make it as detailed as possible. If you can get stronger you would be good at DE. You have to run and no matter what position you play you need to gain a lot of endurance. You should run in your yard about every 2 hours a day thats what i try to do because i lose my breathe easily too. And plus during practices and camps you will have to run a lot. DE is probably your best bet. And since you are a member of a gym just get on the tredmil as much as you can. Good luck i hoped this helped

Not enough information ... need to know speed, vertical leap, etc. 5'9" is relatively short, pack on 238 lbs and my best guess for you would probably be Offensive line (Defensive Line needs a little more height and reach for blocking passes/kicks).
I am guessing you are 14 or 15 yrs old as a freshman so maybe you will gain some height in the next couple of years. Work on your agility and make sure the lbs are lean ones!!!
You might laugh at this but take some ballet lessons on the side and DON'T tell ANYONE! It will GREATLY INCREASE your flexiblity and balance! I know, I know ... just do it. Some of the greatest players have done this because it works!
Like it or not kid ... unless you are fast (really fast) it looks like a lineman you are, at least for now.

I was in a similar situation. When I was in high school I was 250 6'2". I was competition power lifting in the off season, and here were my stats. bench 345, squat 405, 500 dead lift, and 235 power cleangs. I played as nose guard and full back. I loved playing nose guard (D-Line), because you are the first person to react to the ball. your main job is a quarterback head hunter. The additional perk to noseguard is that if you hit the center hard enough for a sustained period of time, you can force a fumble quite regularly. Full back was great, because it afforded me to score and smash people at a full gallop. At this point for you, on Defense I would reccomend linebacker only if you have the stamina and capability to track the ball and lay some serious hits. On offense, I reccomend that you play full back. If you are a stud, you should be able to punch through the line for yardage, as well as be an effective blocker for the half back. Most likely, your coach will place you as he sees appropriate. Lucky for me, I did what I wanted to do. You should also consider playing Iron man football (offense/defense). This a different beast, and if you go this route, I reccomend you work on your agility and cardiovascular stamina. You will be in for the whole game.

Just because you are the strongest on the team, doesn't make you a football player. If you have to ask what position you need to play means to you haven't played very much in the previous years. So my thinking is you would be a better wresler. But if you are sure you wont to play football, maybe you should try Linebacker. You have to be tough and mean to play that position also you didn't say how fast you were. So maybe you would be a better guard or center.

When I went into high school I had the same feelings...
Offensive and Defensive line can be boring...
See if your coaches are open to your ideas talk to them about a move to Fullback or Tight End positions...
Tight End might make more sense, since you already know the blocking sets... That's where I am now...
On defense move to a Defensive End (like me) or an Outside Linebacker...

TAKE MY ADVICE BE A HOG THE HOGS ARE THE REAL MEN OUT ON THE FIELD.TAKE A FULLBACK OR TIGHT END AND PUT HIM IN THE TRENCHES THEY DONT FARE SO WELL. DONT EVEN THINK BOUT QB CAUSE HES THE BIGGEST WUSS ON THE TEAM. AND AT THT WEIGHT IF U CAN PUT ON BOUT FOUR INCHES AND BOUT 50 POUNDS BE A CENTER AND A DEFENSIVE TACKLE COLLEGES COME AND LOOK FOR CENTERS WITH TECHNIQUE NOT SO MUCH HOW BIG THEY AE BUT IF U HAVE TECHNIQUE. I WAS TALKIN TO A SCOUT AND HE TOLD ME THT HE WOULD TAKE A 6' 275-280 CENTER WITH TECHNIQUE OVER A 6'5'' 310-315 POUND CENTER WITHOUT TECHNIQUE. SO GIVE CENTERIN A SHOT.

the only skill position you are really looking at here is fullback. 5 9 is short for a tight end, even in high school. dont shy away from playing line, i was a RB but i was 5 10 170. its a team sport, and dont worry, youll get the credit you deserve for opening those holes in the defense. If you really want to play tight end or fullback, starting running, and running a lot.

I would say tight end would be your best bet. Don't give up on playing the line, though. It may seem 'boring', but linemen are often the core of a great football team.

Try both O-line and D-line see which you like better. If your coaches let you, play both for a season. Keep up the weight training, but make sure you also work on agility, speed, and endurance. Oh yeah, don't forget to keep your grades up. Good Luck

bein strong in the gym dont mean crap. just cause your strong doesnt mean your athletic or even have the heart to play football. people put way too much emphasis on bench presses, 40 times, and vertical leaps. Mike Singletary (among many others) was under sized, had average speed, and average strength, and was one of the greatest football players in history, its all about whats inside. There is a trememdous difference between strong athletes who play football, and FOOTBALL PLAYERS!
