Gaming is the new TV. The gaming industry is the new Hollywood. Before there were video games kids watched cartoons. Before kids watched cartoons they listened to the radio. Before that, books and literature. Before that were storytellers and local theaters.
People have always had a special place in their heart for entertaining stories. And as technology moves forward the entertainment medium evolves.
Your question is best answered like this. Gaming is the newest most current form of entertainment, the most interactive form of storytelling.
Another thing to look at is the escape from reality that gaming provides. In a video game you can be the law. Or above it, or whatever. The stress of life can be completely ignored in exchange for a fictional reality where you are always the hero.
I hope this helps.

Because it's the computer age. I'm not very old (mid-twenties), but I had a computer in the house when I was 7. Younger people have always had a computer in their house. And with the computer comes games.
It's hard to ignore the device that makes interesting noises and sounds and is engrained in your life since birth.
A good suggestion is to limit "video game" time (younger ages 30 minutes, middle ages 60, upper grades 90-120 minutes per day). If it really becomes a problem and discipline issue, you can also say no video games unless they work for it (homework, chores, etc.).
Gaming is popular and unfortunately (except for the Wii and DDR), encourages sitting on the couch. In that regard it's not worse than watching 3 hours of TV though. Participating in sports and exercise isn't just for kids though - adults need to set a good example. Cancel the 300 channel cable package and limit yourselves game wise. Go outside as often as possible! It's good for you! Playing games may have a few good side effects, but watching TV has just about none (you could argue it makes you entertained and that relieves stress, but that's not justification for the extra weight you'll gain sitting around).

For the same reason we enjoyed the outdoor sports when we were kids......entertainment. Unfortunately although it is exercising only their fingers and wrists and some games their minds and hand / eye coordination, without physical activity we 'll have a generation of drooling, mind-numbing fatties.

1) It's an escape from real life
2) Games generally tend to be more interesting that real life (fantasy etc)
3) They're fun
4) They consume vast amounts of time
Also, someone said that games only require finger flexing and stuff - Not with the Wii, you have to move about for that.
