I am not sure what part of the country you live in but my Grandmother always said, it is good luck to see a cardinal in the winter time.

Cardinals tend to get along better with one another before mating season. If it had been spring, the males especially, would be at each other's throats. Males are very protective of their territory and even will fly up into a window if they see their own reflection.

My guess is the your troupe of cardinals were on some sort of feeding trip in your neighborhood. There must be something in your yard that they really like. And maybe there's so much of it there that there really is no need to fight over it.

Then too, when I see a cardinal (or even a pair of cardinals -- male and female) I feel that I have had my day blessed with their color, their songs, and their mere presence.

Some interesting information about the northern cardinal:

Another nice source of information:

(And in this last source, mention is made of cardinals flocking up in the wintertime.)

I hope this helps you.

It basically means that the local tom cat is asleep and thus the red guy can come out for some much needed tree time.

Offhand, I'd say it means that there's a red bird in a tree outside your window and by strange coincidence, you happened to look outside to witness it's presence.
