in the '08 election by attacking the President for not mentioning Katrina in the latest State of the Union message?
Personally, I think Obama would impress me ONLY if he was able to clean up crime in East St. Louis in his own state

Stev is correct. East St. Louis is in Illinois and St. Louis is in Missouri.

Obama will do anything he can to steal the Black vote from Hillary. Nagin is an idiot of a mayor. Since Obama is not working hand in hand with the governor is indicative of Obama & Nagin playing their race card. Of course, as soon as this suspician hits the Democratic party, Obama will run and buddy up with the white governor (I forget her name).
This could also be a "sign" of what we are in for if Obama becomes president.

Actually, if you had been paying attention a lot of people have strongly criticized this President for not mentioning any plans for the Katrina clean up and re-building. You remember from last year don't you? The clean up and re-building that he mentioned then? The ones that were his 'top prority'? Teh ones the government wouldn't rest until they were completed?

As for East St. Louis, yes it is a mess. Yes it needs cleaning up. So you are suggesting that the Federal government begin exercising police powers in cities where there is a crime problem? O'Bama may be a good man but he has no power to clean up crime in East St Louis. If you get a chance read up a little. You'll learn some interesting thing about state and federal powers.

East St. Louis is in Illinois,
St. Louis is in Missouri.
The reason about using East St. Louis as an example is because it has been one of the worst ghetto areas in the US for over 40 years. That has provided the local government plenty of time to fix up crime and they have not been able to do it. Maybe it is time for Illinois congressmen to give a damn.

I don't think Obama has enough experience but I also don't think he should refrain from pointing out failures of the Bush administration, like New Orleans where the Mayor happens to also be a black American (damn I hate any words like that which differentiate).
Also, a state senator would not be that involved with any effort to clean up crime within his state. His interest should be directed towards his state's relationship with the rest of the nation and our national interest. This is not to say that he should not have a strong voice of support and should advocate for help for the area in question.

If they do it would be dangerous for their careers.
1. When someone starts asking the mayor why you didn't have an evac plan like FEMA told you to have.
2. Or what the mayor do with the funds already given him.
3. How come Miss. who got hit hard rebuild quickers.
4. Aid workers who return to New Orleans found the locals weren't doing anything on their own.

If Obama pulls the race card I hope he chokes on it.

Race is a non-issue that is raised by Liberals when they do not have any real platform. The NO debacle has nothing to do with Bush or race and everything to do with Blanco and Nagin's incompetence to get their people out of there and keep their city safe. Further, the city is below sea level and next to the Gulf. this is really a no-brainer here...

Obama is a fool if he thinks he can win the day on race issues. No one buys racial chauvinism anymore, whether its black or white. Plus, unlike Nagin, Obama isn't even African-American. He is half white and his ancestry is from Africa, but only second generation unlike Nagin whose ancestors most likely were chattel slaves.

Wouldn't East St. Louis be in Missouri? Obama represents from Chicago, Illinois.

Candidates start with the base and branch out. Obama is locking in the minority vote early, then he'll branch out. Standard operating procedure.

Hillary is going after women. Curiously, I don't hear you complaining about that.

That Bush did not mention Katrina reconstruction in his State of the Union is a fact. That it incriminates him further in his shameful neglect of the whole fiasco is another unfortunate reality.

You should be angry at Bush for keeping himself vulnerable on this count, and not following through on his promises.

I'm still scratching my head, trying to figure out why he SHOULD have mentioned it. Katrina was a year and a half ago. The rebuilding efforts are well underway. What is there to say? Further, why should the feds be involved in the first place? Disaster relief is properly a state and local function. I'm beginning to wonder if I' m the only one who remembers the term "federalism".

Beleive me pal. It will be one nasty race card before this thing is over. Remember Jessie and his rainbow??? It's alway about race and it won't change because thats how they get thier votes. Remember JFK??? It was about his religon. If they want to use race and Nagin will, then they should be open for all they get tossed at them.
