The landlord is responsible if his employees did the damage. If the landlord hired a contractor, the contractor is responsible for the damage.

The landlord is responsible so long as there is not an exclusionary clause in your lease that says otherwise. No matter who did the damage, the landlord is the one who ultimately granted access to the apartment, and he is the one you have the contract with. If you have renter's insurance (and you really should) you can file a claim with your insurance company, tell them what happened, and they will go after the landlord for you.

If the maintenance people admit to doing that damage then the landlord has to make the repairs and pay for it himself but if they didn't admit to breaking it, you're going to have a problem getting the landlord to do anything about it and you'll end up paying for it yourself.

The landlord is clearly responsible for the damage. If the landlord thinks otherwise then he or she may try and collect from the security deposit.Make it clear to the landlord that is is not fair and is wrong
