It is because it is only a theory, not the truth!

Besides, people, as a rational being, believe in the supernatural and some believe Gods. Religion became a way of living, that is why some people deny the theory of evolution!

The answers below if you many clues.

The main one is simply ignorance. If you hang out in the religion and spirituality room for any length of time some self-deluded person will make a comment about evolution which shows how strong their understanding is.

'its just a theory' - which demonstrates that they do not understand what a scientific theory is http://www.stephenjaygould.org/library/gould_fact-and-theory.html - we have a theory of gravity dont we - but you dont see creationists arguing that we can float around and jump in to outerspace.

'if we came from monkeys, why are there still monkeys?' actually to me this sounds more like an argument against creationism because once you understand evolution you realise that contrary to what the bible says we are not the point of evolution, just a twig on an ancient bough of life's tree.

Simple answer is ignorance.

Mainly because of their religious views. Also, for those people who say its just a theory : "n science, a theory is a proposed description, explanation, or model of the manner of interaction of a set of natural phenomena, capable of predicting future occurrences or observations of the same kind, and capable of being tested through experiment or otherwise falsified through empirical observation. It follows from this that for scientists "theory" and "fact" do not necessarily stand in opposition. For example, it is a fact that an apple dropped on earth has been observed to fall towards the center of the planet, and the theory which explains why the apple behaves so is the current theory of gravitation."

So as you can see, just by calling it a theory, you're proving that it works. Also, gravity is just a theory, but you don't see a big hubub about that. How humans procreate and have babies is just a theory too but you dont contradict that. And just one last thing; there is far more evidence for the theory of evolution then there is for creationism and or the existence of any god in any form. For you see, there is no prrof for the existence of a god or creationism, while there is a multitude of evidence for evolution.

Well there are two reasons and there is often overlap between them. 1)Their religious faith 2) Their research independent of the public school system. The first time I was confronted with the idea that evolution/intelligent design might not be an absolute truth was when I met my future husband. Here was this reasonable guy, who took a ton of science classes as he was a creationist! Weird I thought. Just a few years ago we joined a church where all these very nice, seeminly bright and well educated people all believed in Creation Theory. I was wondering what was up so I started to do a little research on it myself. Shock! This theory would go the way of "Spontaneous generation" went after Louis Pasteur came on the scene if the whole idea of God/faith/Christianity wasn't wrapped up as the "opposing" viewpoint.

Most of the time humans believe what they are told. It takes a scientist being totally objective to really get to the truth of a matter. It is a theory and can't be "proven in a scientific manner" because it's not replicable. We just have to look at al the pieces and parts and see if different theories make sense. After doing some research I decided that evolution was "bunk" and that I would stick with "Literal Biblical Creation" until I find something that sticks wholes in it.

The main reason is that it contradicts the creation story in the Bible. If the creation story is untrue, then it calls into question everything the Bible says. If the Bible is called into question then perhaps there is no God. No God, means no salvation to Christians.
They might claim that the reason they oppose evolutionary theory is because it hasn't been scientifically proven. However, do you notice that they don't attack other scientific theories near as much as evolution ? This despite the fact, that it has overwhelming evidence to back it up. If they held the rest of their beliefs to the same standard of evidence ( including their belief in God) as evolution they would believe nothing, and not be able to function.
As far as finding the nature of reality, Charles Darwin is far more important than Jesus Christ.

Evolution is a scientific theory that explains how all life on earth got to be the way it is. There is overwhelming evidence for evolution, from anatomy, physiology, genetics, continental drift, molecular biology...
500 years ago, people (in Western European civilization) felt the Earth was at the centre of the universe. They were able to justify such a belief by finding religious teachings that agreed (or that could be interpreted by other like-thinking people as agreeing). That doesn't mean the people were wrong, blind, dumb, or anything. That's just how we think. Sometimes we see pattern that agrees with how we think things SHOULD BE.
Moving Earth out of the centre was a blow to our ego. Earth becomes just a small rock orbiting an average star in the outskirts of an average galaxy.
I think, deep down inside (and thousands of people will jump on me for this) I think we (humans) still have to feel that we are somehow important. Our planet might not be the most important place in the universe, but at least we are the most important living thing on the planet. (We have language, morals, culture, a soul (whatever that is)). But evolution suggests that we are no more important, just different from all the other things that evolved from common ancestors. The blow to our ego is so much that many of us just can't believe it. Some try and find religious statements that they can interpret as saying evolution is wrong. Incidently, official church doctrine of Catholics, Anglicans, and most of the other Christian religions do NOT say that evolution is false. So no one should say that they are against evolution because they are Christian.

It's a theory not a law.... theories SHOULD be questioned.

It's the nature of science to revist theories and question them.

That said, I do believe the theory of evolution to be plausible. It fits the evidence we have, and what evidence is missing (i.e. gaps in the fossil record) are no reason to throw out the theory.

Evolution can be demonstrated and observed (e.g. Galapagos finches - in the past 20 years there has been major changes in the dominant beak shape), we can also find genetic evidence.

People have a right to believe in other explanations - you can't force them to believe in evolution and why waste your time? They have closed minds.

I just wish these creationists/intelligent designers would go post on the philosophy/religion threads instead of coming here and baiting those with a scientific mind.. Do what I do and report them for abuse (I consider it harrassment).

I don't care what their personal beliefs are - they are welcome to them. Why do they come here trying to make me see their point of view - we don't go over to their thread and try and sway them! It's annoying!

Becase its a theory with no more evidence than any of the religions Science always has to have the answer to everything why cant scientists accept some things are supposed to be beyond mans understanding instead of saying unless god offers himself up for an experiment they wont believe in him the things that stop people believing in evolution is called belief ,faith and optimism.Besides God has proved himself many times you just need to read the bible to see that.
There is one thing that scientists will never be able to explain where did the universe come from? the big bang theory gives no evidence and besides where did the chemicals come from and the spark to case such an explosion come from they came from the universe so thats that theory down the drain

It may be because What they called theory of Evolution was really a philosophy and in it, one 's opinion is as good as another. However the original studies of Darwin actually applied to Birds only. His out come conclusion was for the Birds. He could not apply that to Creation because he did not have a Cristal ball to see in true details" How "our Creator really did it.
The word evolution implies changes with time.
As per 2nd law of thermodynamics there is an evolution in the systems of this world. It basically formulates that for a change to be effected a degradation has to take place.
So Evolution implies that things degrade with time and it agrees with the 2nd Law of thermodynamics.
A very simple proof is to follow the life of a human to its final out come in time.
The body decomposes..

Because evolution, to its fullest extent, contradicts the Creation view. Those who are Christian or religious will find this contradiction offensive based on what they are taught, and oppose it.

Also, there is no hard evidence to suggest full-scale evolution, such as fish evolving into amphibians, reptiles evolving into birds, and so on. Likewise there is no hard evidence to suggest Creation either (hence the term "faith"). This gives both sides ammunition, and thus an unending debate.
