It's up to each website designer whether they want a www at the start of their address. Note for example that Yahoo answers doesn't have one: it is answers.yahoo.com without any www.

The original purpose of the www was to distinguish the web part of the site from the other functions such as e-mail etc, but it's a bit redundant now.

I have not used www in almost a year. If you have the google or yahoo toolbar, you can check the box, so that it will go into the address bar without www, or .com..good luck..

Hmmm, 'answers.yahoo.com' kind of answers that by itself!

Websites no longer have to start with 'www' but not heard of anything that will mean they cannot start with 'www'. If they did then there would be a lot of big and powerful companies p***d off by losing their URLs. Would you fancy facing the wrath of www.ibm.com, www.hp.com, www.dell.com and www.sun.com when you're using (probably) their kit to run the web?

I am not sure if it will become officially extinct or not. Most of the time, you can skip the "www" part when typing something into a browser and it goes that web site automatically already.

Try it.

The web address for my office has never had the "www". It's not that unusual.

LMAO No, sorry, whatever you just 'heard' was nonsense!

Why are so many people answering this who have no idea what that 'www' is?!

the www is still there, but your browser understands that you would have typed that in, so it will fill it in for you. so in essence, you dont need to.
