I oredered something online and the status is " in transit" what does that mean?

it means that it's on it's way.

If you are checking on UPS's website and it says "out for delivery" you should get it that day.

That means it is ON it's way to you via road or air. Most times the company includes a "tracking number", you can then go to the shipper's website, ie; UPS, and put that number in the specified area. Some company's will give you an estimated delivery date as well.

it means its on its way, ariving ,coming soon,etc. from whichever courier. sends it
