A man in a restaurant asked a waiter for a juice glass, a dinner plate, water, a match, and a lemon wedge. The man poured enough water onto the plate to cover it.
"If you can get the water on the plate into this glass without touching or moving this plate, I will give you $100," the man said. "You can use the match and lemon to do this."
A few minutes later, the waiter walked away with $100 in his pocket. How did the waiter get the water into the glass?

First, the waiter stuck the match into the lemon wedge, so that it would stand straight. Then he lit the match, and put it in the middle of the plate with the lemon. Then, he placed the glass upside-down over the match. As the flame used up the oxygen in the glass, it created a small vacuum, which sucked in the water through the space between the glass and the plate. Thus, the waiter got the water into the glass without touching or moving the plate.

Put the lemon wedge on the water filled plate. Light the match and place it on the lemon so that is rests and still burns. Place the glass upside down over the lemon and lit match and watch as the flame burns up the oxygen and creating a slight vacum. Said vacum then pulls the water into the upside down Juice glass and the waiter collects his $100.

Excellent!!!! I just tried it. I didn't have a lemon wedge so I held the match up with a small circular incense holder. The water looked like it started to bubble around the edge of the glass and it did draw in the water from the plate.
Cool!

PS as you can see I had no idea how to do that until I read the answers above...thanks guys!

The previous poster obviously answered the question in the spirit of the riddle as intended. But thinking out of the box, since the challenge was directed specifically to the waiter, a simpler solution would have been to have someone else empty the plate of water into the glass for him.

Besides I'm not sure this would work. I will have to go home and try it.

Interesting riddle anyway.

Stick the match in the lemon wedge so it is standing upright. Float this ontop of the water. Light the match and place the glass upturned over the lit match. As the match burns up the oxygen under the glass a vacum will be formed causing the water to rise up into the glass.

Wheres my $100. lol.

the sacrastic viewpoint:

the waiter lapped the water up, mind you without touching the plate as directed, and spit it into the glass.

ha ha

come on, a little humor here.
