Scent of Roses, by Kat Martin****
Eye of the Storm, by Dee Davis****
Body of Evidence, by Stella Cameron***
Killer Takes All, by Erica Spindler*****
The Witch of Cologne, by Tobsha Learner****
All romance novels, but they are great stories! They are mystery stories, where there is a crime to solve. Killer Takes All is the best one (5 stars from me!) The Witch of Cologne isn't a mystery type romance, it is a forbidden love type of story. This one is a bit more graphic then I would have liked, but other than that it was a very good story about a Catholic man who falls in love with a Jewish midwife who is accused of being a witch in the 15th century.

You could try Sherrilyn Kenyon's Fantasy Lover (not so good name, great book). It's a paranormal romance with lots of Greek and Roman mythology references. Although it appears to be a long book, it is a quick read, very interesting. Since it was recently re-released it is very easy to find.
You might also want to try an anthology which has a group of shorter stories in it. I recently read Midnight Pleasures which I enjoyed very much. Also there is an anthology called Dark Dreamers with two stories by Christine Feehan and Marjorie Liu and I loved both of those stories. Both these books are paranormally based.
A very fluffy, quick contemporary romance I read was called "You Don't Know Jack" which was okay, it borderlines past a "little" trashy though so I thought I'd give you a heads up.
I would also suggest checking out some of the chain romances you can see in the supermarket. Harlequin used to have a line of Intrigue books I read many of that I think you would enjoy, but would be hard to find. I'm sure their current selection probably has some gems as well. The intrigue series has very action packed, contemporary romances. Smart women and strong men, like you said LOL
Although I, personally, also really enjoyed the previous suggestion of Robin McKinley's book, Sunshine, it might not be the right book for someone who doesn't want to have to do a lot of concentrating on plot. The story Beauty falls in the catagory of literature, lots of description and very innocent, not trashy at all.

Then you want the best of the best.
For contemporary: Jennifer Crusie, without a doubt. Smart women, strong men, intelligent humor, page-turning reads. Anything with her name on it is excellent, the newer the better. Susan Elizabeth Phillips is also a good choice.
If you prefer historical, try Betina Krahn or Loretta Chase.
All of these are well-written with strong, realistic characters.

I assume you are asking for recomendations.
Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier - a great gothic novel
Sunshine or Beauty by Robin McKinley
Laurie King's Mary Russell books -- the premise sounds hokey, but they are great books, not cheesy at all
Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels. Read them in order, a bit unbelievable, but laugh out loud funny and def. trashy. Fast reads.

My favorite romance novelist is Julia Quinn. Hers are set in the Regency period in England. My favorite is her Bridgerton series--8 in all. My particular favorite, although not the first in the series, is Romancing Mr. Bridgerton. The heroine is very smart, very likeable. And in my opinion is the key spark for most of the other novels...

Try books written by Georgette Heyer or Mary Stewart – more adventure than romance, but very entertaining and easy to read.
Heyer – Only if you have a sense of humour
Stewart – Only if you like cars
