I'm not sure it's a great idea to tour at that age. Unless he's amazing and the rest of the band are much older It'd be much better to play gigs in and around the bands home town. Touring can be hard work for a relatively unknown band and it is potentially demoralising playing to small crowds of people who are not fans of the band, and potentially could be a little cynical towards young bands.
Building a following at home is far more important to a young band first as it gives a platform and confidence to the band to take their music out on tour later. Presumably he'd leave school at 16, which is still young to be out touring, but those couple of years may make all the difference.
Some venues may not allow under 16s under 18s perform because they are licensed bars. Certainly this is the case in the UK, where we play, we sometimes had trouble getting gigs with 17 year olds in our band.
Having said that, it all depends on the band, how good/experienced they are and the maturity of the individuals - some 14 year olds would be ready, some 30 year olds still act 14 so who knows.

I guess that would depend on how your parents feel about it. How would you feel about leaving your family for long periods of time? Have you thought about how you would be schooled and who would be doing it?? The life of a traveling band is not easy and I think you should look into it more before just taking the leap.

Yes, but the gigs aren't there in great numbers. Probably only local but in a few years' time, it could grow. I know. I was there at 13.

Yes you can, but I think he'd need to be tutored, or home schooled at that age.
