is it right to say that after buying and installing a router, i can connect more than one laptop to the internet without cable at the same time? do i need to pay extra $$ to my network provider? does it even have anything to do with them?

If you already have broadband Internet (such as DSL or cable), the router sets between your cable/DSL modem and your computers. The router will have multiple ports so that more than one computer can be hooked to it at a time. If it is also a wireless router, it will allow multiple wireless computers to attach to it.

The router then control the conversation between the computers and the modem. Because one computer is not making use of the modem 100% of the time (usually only about 5-10%), the router is able to share the connection between several computers, allowing them all to talk over a single connection.

Most ISPs do not charge extra for having multiple devices on a single connection. Rather, they just limit the amount of bandwidth your modem can handle to that you do not overwhelm the network with multiple PCs. You will notice that as you add more devices to the router, they may run slower. They have to share that bandwidth between all the computers.
