One may contain information where the other doesn’t and I’m totally confused as to which is the latest.
Any advice/programs/sites as to how I can resolve this problem?

Use MS Word's Compare & Merge Documents. You can see the differences between two files. You also need to check the time when the files last time modified.

Why, right click on the file, and under properties seek "created" and "last modified". They give the date and time, so, the last modified will have more info in it.
