First, you need a large amount of land--suitable for tree growth. Then contact the National Arbor Day Foundation and they'll help you choose the trees to plant or confirm the ones you want to plant will do well in your area. They will also supply the trees for a nominal fee and tell you how to care for them as time passes.

We have an organisation called Trees for Life in Australia. You probably do too, or something similar. Get in touch. They ensure that only trees and bushes native to the area are planted. They'll have volunteers plant seeds and care for the seedlings. I've done it and although it's like giving up a pet to a new home, knowing that those little sapplings are going to a good home is rewarding in itself. Friends with property have put on a BBQ and invited friends to bring boots and spades, and we've all planted what has since become a small forest, supporting birds and other critters. It's good to know you are interested in getting into such a noble activity or past time. Good luck with it, you won't regret doing so.

That depends of what type of Tree Farm you have in mind. Whether you want to grow trees for Whole Sale( native or Ornamental), Trees for Milling??
Either way you will have to of cause have the land, and most likely have or you wouldn't ask the question and do your research on the types of trees you can grow locally for your conditions.
The Department of Agriculture/Horticulture in your area should be able to help.

Spruceman - Thanks for the input. I am not touching my mature trees. I am starting this nursery on 1.6 open acres adjacent to the treed area. Loblollies of this size are
valuable, but they will stay where they are. Wish I did have black cherry and walnut, and copper beech, but I do not. Have a lot of white oak, red oak, even black oak, and sweetgum.
