Look at the way many "government" departments work.
They have to advertise all public-positions, but when was the last time you heard of a talented person being appointed to any of them, unless they have had years of experience in how to work badly, using out-dated systems in other public bodies?
There is a culture of seniority in public bodies, and the Post Office is a classic example, where the best people are controlled by a system which favours long-serving employees rather than bright ones.
It is endemic throughout the public-service "industry," along with extended "training" meetings, "conferences," "project management seminars," "implementation schedules," "partnership enterprise monitoring," "heatlh and safety in the office," "staff development" and all the rest of these pointless diversions.
In fact, there is a probably a hidden university, devoted to saving money by spending it in the worst possible way.
It is absolutely typical, and sadly true, that a new electron-micropscope could not be used for 12 months, because it took up all the budget for the year at a particular university. They needed a camera to make it work properly. When it was suggested that this could be taken from the budget for photographic equipment, it was decided that this was not the same faculty, and that this would not be possible.
When government departments stop running like miltary procurement departments, and when they have senior people with real mangement ability and experience, plus the responsibility for financial control and budgets, they might get somewhere.
Of course, the idea that a senior manager could dismiss a bad employee, would be one revolution too far, I fear.

It's a great idea. The first thing Gordon Brown did as Chancellor was to hand control of the economy to the Bank of England. The National Health should be controlled by health experts such as doctors, not by politicians. Education should be controlled by a committee of academics and other interested parties, not by politicians.

It amazes me how many lawyers get elected to government, and as we all know, lawyers look after number one. Why they get these plum jobs is a mystery to me. You would have thought that someone somewhere would have some experience at doing the work they are allocated to do. This would not happen in the private sector, but government can carry the burden of ineptitude without breaking stride. Bizarre.

I do not think that is a good idea. The tax payer yet again will end up having to pay extortionate wages for them.If the goverment cannot manage them then if they pay out of there wages then yes it might work. They let so called experts deal with pensions
they are a mess.Theres hundreds of people who paid into pensions have lost every penny.

It isn't surprising really that most people think this government has been criminally incompetent for a long time. The trouble with governments is that they never admit when they are wrong or failing(especially this one). If they did then things could be corrected. That is why The UK is in trouble.

I will agree to the fact that politicians seems to have no economic clue as to what they are doing and the consequences of their actions, butmost of us would probably disagree on who we should and would call an expert.

I would be surprised that 69% of any of us actually think. Most Americans quote what they hear in the media rather than having to expend any energy looking for facts themselves. Lazy people don't think. Never have and never will....it takes too much energy

Dear JS,
What a powerful question!
You may wish to know that there a move pending involving:
a. Sacking ALL politicians (because they are incompetent).
b. Replacing them with Polish administrators (because they ARE competent).
Regards,
Basilisk
