They are a matter of personal choice, although I think it ridiculous - particularly the cost of some of them. However, they help to pass a long tedious journey. The best I saw was PEN 15

When I purchased my new vehicle, the guy in the show room asked if I had any preference for the number plate. the reply was," I don't care what it is, as long as it doesn't have any resemblance to my name".
Fortunately with Cassandra, that's highly unlikely.
I couldn't care less if other people have a personalised plate
The fact of the matter is, I'm already doing my bit to get people's back up, I have a white four wheel drive vehicle, and we all know how popular they are;-)
That together with a named number plate, would mean war!
As for the worst, but funny, was one that was suppose to look like, U4 SX. I can't remember the rest. It wasn't until the third set of traffic lights, I fell in.
He had a super Ferrari sports car...

I'm ambivalent about them. It's a nice gadget, but how insecure does someone have to be to advertise themselves in that way? It's also a waste of money if you're paying for it every year, but if it were a one-time custom plate that can be renewed, then it's okay.
Here are some interesting anecdotes on custom plates:
1. Custom license plates were just coming into use in the early 1980s. After Dale Hawerchuk's rookie season he bought his mother a car; he won the rookie of the year in the NHL (over 100 points) and is now in the Hockey Hall of Fame.
The license plate on the car read NHL 100, and many people thought it was a vanity plate. He got the tag purely by chance.
2. One of the biggest chokers in Olympic history was US figure skater Debbie Thomas. She got a vanity plate that read "SK8N4AU", or "skating for gold". She didn't even win a medal.
3. The New York state licensing agency does not allow "obscene" license plates, but some people tried to circumvent the rules. One driver had the plate, "3M WOJ8", or in a mirror, "blow me".
Here's one from Wisconsin containing a particular three letter word that yahoo is so tight-butted about I have to type "butt" in its place:
http://www.thesmokinggun.com/blueplate/assorgy1.html
Another driver (obviously a New York Ranger fan) was not allowed to get a plate that read "POTVNSUX", or "Potvin Sucks!", a famous Ranger fan chant of the late 1970s and early 1980s. (Potvin was one of the NHL's hardest hitters; he injured Jan Erixon with a hit and killed the Rangers chances of winning the Stanley Cup in 1979, their best chance since 1940, and never again until 1994.)
4. A big furor arose in Gainesville, Florida because a man had a plate that read "ATHEIST". He had it for _16_ years before a bunch of godnazis got their panties in a collective twist and complained that it was "offensive"; somehow, they found the right(wing) bureaucrat dumb enough to do what they wanted and ban the tags after 16 years of use.
Of course, there were no complaints about the vanity plates with christian words, despite them being just as "offensive"....
The man fought for his rights and was able to keep the tag under the argument that "If mine has to go, ALL religious tags have to go". I guess the godbots didn't like the thought of that.

http://www.freedomforum.org/templates/document.asp?documentID=15924
http://www.atheists.org/flash.line/atheist6.htm
And, of course, I found it no surprise to read that some godbots resorted to vandalism and violence at the sight of the tag.

I used to want one with my initials and the year I was born but it was expensive and worth more than what I paid for my car. I think they come across as arrogant. I hate the "s3xy" ones, very tacky indeed, they are usually on the cars with pink fluffy seat covers and fluffy steering wheel and dice hanging off the rear view mirror - chavs!

I am neither. I would pick a general one because it is cheaper. But a personlized one will make it easier to find my car at work in a parking lot full of eggplant honda civics.

They are a waste of money in my opinion and usually very unimaginative. I mean who is so vain they have their name on their number plate. I must admit though I like funny ones
