The coolies came from China to have a better life from the oppresive Manchu government.

They came in with nothing and work for low wages....the famous Chines steamboat was originated by coolies in Shanghai and Shingapore, everyone scours for scarps of leftovers and dump them into one steaming pot.

Its just like Philipinos workers coming here to work as domestic maids today....leaving home for a better income elsewhere.

Our coolies come mainly from Guangdong, Fujian and Chowzhou hence the mainly dialects here.

Most of the new arrivals worked in the Clarke and Boat quays areas, many were inducted or form secret societies either to compete with established syndicates or simply for protection.

Even today, you will find that certain areas in singapore are predominantly dialect based like Houggang is a teochew area..bla bla..

Hey, I am not telling you more...go research your own homework..lol
