my best guess is they are both right...tacks are sharp and so is the sound of a whip cracking...and the pain if it hits you ouch! There are so many strange sayings out there...LOL One old fashioned saying that my dad used to say was when someone lost weight he would say they "fell off" I am like fell off, fell off what? LOL

sorry a tack is sharp , the point, a whip isn't , the saying there is to crack a whip as in get someone moving.
