Need to get some files off an old computer. I believe that this type of cable is made, but am not sure who sells them. Websites? Stores? Would appreciate any good tips!

I think this is what you are looking for. I have never used this myself, but there are some comments from users indicating that it works:

Pop the hard drive out of the old computer. Put it in place of the CD drive on the new computer. Copy the fiels over. And then return it to the old computer. You do not need a cable for copying the files.

I am not aware of anyone making a USB to Ethernet adaptor. With the difference in the number of pins, etc. it would be impractical to try to adapt a signal between those two.

If you want to do it "by cable", install an Ethernet card in both computer and use a "cross over" cable (has the pins reverse from a normal cable on one end) to connect them in an ad-hoc network.

Here is the solution to your problem. You need to choose one of these:

Install it and then plug a Cat 5 patch cable into the adapter. That should take care of your problem. A patch cable looks like this:

If you are using XP on either the old computer or the new one, start the Files and Settings Transfer Wizard. It will walk you through the rest of the process. Doesn't matter which computer you start it on (new or old) so long as it has Windows XP or Vista.

Hope this helps!

I have never seen these before.. Just install a cheap 10/100 NIC card in the old PC and make or buy a crossover cable, and create an ad-hoc (in NIC card properties). That is easiest way..
