I purchased a $40.00 Belkin router and $45.00 wireless notebook card this weekend so that I could network the desktop and laptop computers. I have road runner service with a cable modem. Since they have been hooked up I have noticed the computers are lagging quite a bit, especially the laptop. Before the router was connected I only had the desktop connected to the internet and it almost never lagged. I think it is probable that the router is the cause of the lag. Would upgrading to a broadband router help a lot? They had a Linksys (sp?) broadband router for $130.00 but we didn't think we needed one that expensive. Any suggestions?

I asked the pros about it six months ago. The extra money for the name brand is worth it in this case. Linksys is the brand you want! The others will be disappointing. The Geek squad will tell you the same if they know the difference. I would go for the best if I needed it. My Linksys g band with speed boost works good for me. But. I bought before the new stuff came out. It is a lot of money. However the prices are set like a monolopy because the product is that good.

The ethernet that is going from the modem to the router could be plugged into the gateway port. in view which you didnt say what router you have i will't say the right port call. no longer port a million 2 3 4 inspite of the shown fact that. then you definately plug an ethernet out of your computing gadget into port a million 2 3 4. Or if its prompt then you definately dont plug something in. The usb is for the modem to the pc incase you didnt prefer to apply ethernet.

I've used the Netgear WGR314 router for years and have never had a problem. The best router money can buy for $40. I think Newegg is having a deal today, because they're throwing in a free switch.

I've used some Linksys products in the past and have found them to be very flaky. Same with Belkin. I only use Netgear and I rarely have problems.

If you need cards, also go with Netgear:

no the router is just fine, sometimes the internet you are using is abit slow so i recommend that you upgrade your broadband package to a better ones. and sometimes both of the pc's is trying to access so many pages at the same time with a slow connection so that is 1 of the cause that could make lagging possible..

By lagging do you mean slow internet connection? Make sure you have the router set at 802.11g 54Mbp/s, a router should have no impact on a computers actual performance. If its the internet lagging, check all your settings in the card and the router itself..

I would suggest first going to a website called speedguide.net.
There you can get a tool that will optimize your PC for broadband usage.

http://www.speedguide.net/tcpoptimizer.php

In their download section
you can safely use the TCP Optimizer which will speed up your connection.
