What elements in that person's character can drive him to be able to commit such an atrocity? I sincerely don't get it. I could see myself killing someone out of self defense, but otherwise the idea is deeply disturbing. How can anyone do it?

Pure Greed, desperate need of money for wrong addictions, proffesional gun for hire, being in employ of Armed forces where you have to obey orders.

Desperation... sometimes they dint mean to kill someone, however the situation may drive someone to. Eg. during robbery, things gets out of hand, u panic, u kill...

there are various parts of our human brain which is affected by some dep mental strike or some loss or excess of enzymes...
you should be aware of the disorder where one kills himself by eating away body parts because they are so much in love wih the pain they get.
really..
there may be some thing in their brain..which may be forcing them to kill somebody for money...because they have extreame love for money.
