If your emails end with @AOL.com, unfortunately no you can't.

AOL only wants you only when you pay and cancelling your AOL email addresses is one of their gimmicks to make people stay as subscribers.

Several months ago I dumped aol. and completely deleted all files from my computer ( be sure to go to search and search for residual files and dump them too) and I am still able to sign in under my old user name and pass word in the new free AOL. so I had no problems.

nope, you know what else sucks if you get it cut off and come back you can't get your old handle, which makes no sense because no is using it so they mind as well reactivate it for you. I have had 3 or 4 handles in the past 5 years. It's ridiculous.
