Use Elixer mid gauge. They are teflon coated strings that sound better than any other string.

Most major brands offer what are called flatwound strings. They have a duller sound and are usually used for jazz. They also eliminate the zipping noise caused by sliding your fingers up and down the strings.

Buy a range of strings from heavy to ultra fine.
AND TRY THEM!!
Only you can tell if you like them or not!
Or if you like tuning every two minutes, try nylon strings, yuk!

This is largely a matter of personal preference. I like D'Addario phosphor bronze.

try a set of brass hold down pins will make a huge differance
