Can anyone suggest a casue for these symptoms of my sick 1988 750iL? After filling the tank, I started it up and the EML/F (can't remember what the initials are) light came on and remained on (it is in the centre of the dash, next to the oil signal, under the speedo). when i took off, the car was stuck in a low down gear and couldn't accelerate. i limped it home and since then it has been blowing a white smoke that smells of some kind of chemical. i have checked all the fluids and it didn't need a top up of anything incl water, oil, transmition, brake, etc. Can anyone suggest what the smoke might be a symptom of? It increases in volume when I rev the engine. I haven't taken it out onto the road since.

Sure sounds like ATF (automatic transmission fluid) is leaking on to the exhaust. Check your transmission fluid again.

On a 750 the EML is the electric throttle control motors. You have two of them. When it senses a fault it will go into limp mode limiting your throttle. For the white smoke not sure. Could be a couple of things. Way to rich on gas will cause raw fuel to hit the cat. converters and will cause white smoke. I would have the fault checked out and go from there.

If I'm not mistaken, this car will interpret a loose gas cap as an engine fault. The engine goes into limp-home mode, which means only half the cylinders fire. I would guess that partially burned gas is causing the smoke. Maybe, maybe not, but easy enough to check.

WHITE SMOKE IS USUALLY INDICATIVE OF COOLANT IN COMBUSTION CHAMBER.
