At my work, employees are not allowed to have any sort of tobacco products, cigarettes, chewing tobacco, none of that. Eventually this entire city (for me it's Charlotte, I think San Fransisco is also making a big push) is going to be "smoke free", with the laws they keep passing so why don't they just skip ahead a step and ban tobacco products from even being around?

Greenkitten: I am a non-smoker advocating the smokers. I'm pointing out that in this city, they're trying to make the WHOLE CITY what they call smoke free, but yet they still sell cigarettes everywhere. Does it make sense to be selling tobacco products in a city where no one can use them?

If a TOTAL BAN is slapped on tobacco products, cigarettes will move to that list which includes heroin, marijuana, grass and other deadly drugs. And the production, sales and money-making cycle will be handed over to the drugs mafia.

Rather than doing that, the Governments want to ensure that they are able to make money out of the tobacco industry and enforce control on tobacco production, marketing as well as consumption.

Because the PMIs and BATs are in the tobacco business, the mafias don't find it worthwhile to make and sell cigarettes. Once the BATs and PMIs go out, the mafias will just jump in.

I know that the next question would be "so are we going to legalise all those deadly drugs to deprive the drugs mafia of the money?" The answer is "No." Because tobacco doesn't affect people's judgment the way those drugs do. Therefore, it can't be put in the same list.

So far the only country in the world to impose a TOTAL BAN on smoking is Bhutan.

And, FYI, I don't work for the tobacco industry. Let alone being a Nick Naylor.

You make a good point. One day we will be at the point where a box of cigarettes is $15 and you are only allowed to smoke inside of your home. They try to discourage people from smoking and yet they won't stop selling cigarettes. All the tobacco companies should just close up shop and find another product to sell.

They tried it in the 20's with alcohol. It didn't work. Throw in the tax revenues and money thrown around Washington by the tobacco industry and you can see where it wouldn't work on tobacco.

Tax money
A pack cost about a buck to make and sell it for 4+.
It taxes the poor.
States don't care about the health care because when they got the big settlement it was spent on their pork projects not helping smokers.

It is called FREEDOM.

And, it's the fact that Democrats and Republicans get paid a lot of money by tobacco farmers in the south.

Why shouldn't people be allowed to smoke if they want to? Who are you (and the government) to license the behaviour of ohter people?

If there is anything on this planet that we own it is our own bodies and what we do with them is our own business.

Tobacco is not illegal because they are making lots of money from it with tax. Illegal drugs are illegal because they are making lots of money by pushing the price up and not paying tax.

That would be fine with me but the states that grow tobacco have a lot of power.

It`s taxable. Plus the tobacco companies donate millions to political parties so that they can keep their products of death on sale.

I personally would love to see the product banned but look what happened when they banned liquor in the 20's.
