The rocks are held in the crop of the bird. This is an area below the beak and above the stomach. the food is ground finely prior to entering the stomach.
Further to your question the birds do not have an appendix as part of their gastro intestinal system. therfore an appendicitis( inflammation of the appendix) cannot occur

Funny you should ask this question. As a matter of fact some birds are so full of rocks that they have trouble taking off. Birds have gizzards not stomachs and therefore do not get appendicitus, according to the Northern Ontario Society of bird watchers and busybodies some birds such as the yahoo bird in Northern Ontario have great difficulty landing and taking off because they have very short legs and are generally full of rocks. I sure hope this helps enlighten your knowledge of birds. If you require more info read the new book by Jack Schitt and his wife Loda Schitt.

The bird doesn't eat the rocks, but stores it in it's craw. This is a pocket in the throat which helps grind seeds to help digest food. Later,it tosses out the rocks.
