For earning some gold on Guild Wars, I would suggest the following:

1. Pick up all drops. Whenever you kill a monster, clean up after it. Picking up worthless looking items may look like a bother, but small money gathers up quickly. When you get back into town sell them to merchant.

2. Collect monster collector drops. These are specific items that only a certain monster will drop, such as Charr Hides which will only be dropped by Charr. Certain collector NPCs will exchange these monster drops for a weapon that will have a greater selling value at the merchant than the monster drops itself. Have a look at collectors and see what their trades are and note the value.

3. Identify all colored armor drops. By doing this, you will identify the rune that is contained in the armor. After identifying, check the rune trader for its selling price. If the rune trader is selling the rune for 190 gold or more, then expert salvage the rune and sell to the merchant (if you don't need the rune, of course!). However, if the rune trader is selling the rune below 190 gold, then consider selling the armor with the rune still attached for a higher profit.

4. Expert salvage empty colored armor drops. Sometimes you may find yourself fortunate to have expert salvaged a rune out of an armor drop without destroying the armor itself. If the armor still contains its colored name, then consider expert salvaging it for a chance to obtain some rare crafting materials. However, if you don't want to risk a high-valued armor to only salvage it and get, for example, wood planks, then sell the armor to the merchant.

5. Note monster drops. Some monster drops have a chance to be salvaged into rare crafting material. You should take notice of the monsters around the area you are located at and the type of crafting materials their monster drops give. For example, Rain Beetles drop Geode. This monster drop, if expert salvaged, gives you a chance to obtain a Ruby or Sapphire. However, also know that these rare crafting materials are not always a guarantee. Sometimes you will only obtain common crafting materials instead.

6. Sell all unnecessary crafting materials. Have a look at your characters and decide what type of armor you are planning to get them. Now, take note of the armors requirements for crafting and save up enough crafting materials to accommodate for those armors. Everything else, attempt to sell.
With common crafting materials, compare the selling price at the materials trader, and then price that the merchant is willing to give you for the materials. If the merchant is buying your materials for more, sell to merchant. If the materials trader is buying for more than the merchant, then sell to the materials trader.
With rare crafting materials, consider selling to other players. Note the selling price at the rare materials NPC, then try selling the materials a little lower than the NPC. However, if you don't have the patience to merchant them to others, then simply sell them to the rare materials trader.

7. Collect or sell dyes. People love to dye their armors, therefore, I suggest collecting and keeping these dyes for yourself. This way, it will save you from having to spend cash on all the dyes that you want. However, if you have dyes which have a good or high value, and you do not need them, then consider selling them to the dye trader or selling to other players for a lower price than at the dye trader NPC.

8. Gold and Purple weapons. If you obtain any weapon drops such as these, note the requirement of the weapon and its damage. If it is at maximum damage and requires an attribute of 10 or lower, then consider selling to other players. These go at a price range of anywhere between 1K to 5K. Some people sell for more, but successful sale at higher prices require patience. Please note that you should not identify the weapons before selling. You want to sell the colored weapon unidentified. This is a gamble-sale since players buy these unidentified for a chance to get some good modifications on the weapon. However, there is still a chance to get useless modifications. Either way, you still earn a profit of a few platinum.

9. Farming. You can attempt to farm green weapons. However, this is not always a guaranteed drop, and can take quite some time and effort. Most people farm solo, because there is a greater chance of better drops when you attempt a farming run alone, however, it also requires a good skill bar combo for taking down mobs quickly and effectively. It is a good way of making a lot of cash, however, you will find that most farming builds that are used by many players are now obsolete because of the nerfing of skills that Arenanet has done, or the changes to mobs' reaction to damage. Where a solo-farmer would be able to take down a mob with a set of skills in one go, you will find that mobs are much more intelligent now and will eventually run away from you to heal before coming back to finish you off. This has now made green weapon farming more difficult.

10. End-game treats. At the ending of Factions and Nightfall, you will be able to obtain either an "Amulet of the Mists" (Factions) or a "Book of Secrets" (Nightfall). These can only be received once per character and can be traded in at one of the available NPCs for a weapon of choice, or can be sold to other players. If you do not want a weapon from any of the exclusive end-game collector NPCs, then consider selling to other players. These can be sold at a price anywhere between 25K to 30K.

As for gaining levels quickly, consider the following:

1. Consider doing all possible quests. These will give you EXP which will be much more than simply running in and out of towns killing the mobs around the area.

2. In Factions and Nightfall, you receive a certain item (Monastery Credits or Battle Commendations) which can be traded in at specific NPCs which will allow you to obtain EXP scrolls. Trade these items in for a particular EXP scroll of choice and use them whenever you go into missions or are questing. This will increase your EXP gain by 50% more.

3. Along your journey to doing and completing quests outside of towns, consider killing everything in sight that still gives you EXP.

The quickest way to gain levels is simply to do as many quests that are available as possible. You gain more experience from the quests than you do from fighting monsters. That said though fighting monsters can be important depending on which game you have. In Guild Wars: Nightfall you need to gain sunspear promotion points (from quests and for bounties on monsters) for one of the titles and also for one of the quests and I think Factions has a section where you need to amass a number of points before continuing.
The quickest way of getting through the quests and missions is to group up with others and you'll fly through them. I would recommend having a look at the GW wiki site http://gw.gamewikis.org/wiki/Main_Page and having a look at the info about the quests and missions. Sometimes there are things which are only possible to get while doing the quest so if you miss it the first time you'll have to hang around waiting for someone who's got the quest so you can group with them to get it.
With regards to making money, it's not really a major issue until later in the game and you won;t be getting much worth selling till then anyway.
Hope this helps.
