There is no maximum, but the minimum is 4 weeks - but even this can be side stepped to a certain extent by basing the 4 weeks entitlement on the employees contracted weekly hours - i.e. 4 weeks x 48 contracted hours = 192 hours leave per Year or a sneaky employer could word a contract to give an employee a 37 hour contract with no maximum working hours, then give the employee 4 weeks x 37 hours = 148 hours leave per year which if you take a working day as being 8 hours is a whole lot less days off.....
Note to Barrie: I was basing this on an employee that had set contracted hours, agreed in the contract between the employee and employer, however you are correct as an employee with no contracted hours, that worked varying hours would be based on average weekly hours worked x 4, as we do with our casual employees - however other than our casual employees I have not come across many people personally that do not have some form of contracted weekly hours to base a holiday entitlement on. By the way - my guys actually get 28 days plus bank holidays, which isn't so bad

There is no maximum holiday but there is a minimum of four weeks paid leave based on the average hours or days that you work each week.
So if you work 16 hours per week your years entitlement would be four weeks at 16 hours per week.
This entitlement includes bank holidays although I believe this is about to change so that you get four weeks plus bank holidays.
Note to A bloke:
If your hours vary your entitlement is based on the average hours worked, there is no real way that employers can get round this if their employees know their rights.
I recommend that everyone join a union and get the legal protection that comes with having someone working for you.

There is no maximum, it is generally down to the employer. In some cases, however, it is down to other factors. Teachers, for example, have around three months but have no discretion about when these are taken. Occupations which are considered very stressful, and which demand high levels of safety, may have longer holidays - e.g. airline pilots.
