I don't have any idea why many of these women are telling you to buy XL jogging suits! That's no way to dress when you're pregnant, and guess what, you're never going to wear those massive jogging suits after you're pregnant anyway!
The thing about maternity clothes is they have extra room in the butts and bellies, but they don't have the correspondingly huge legs and arms, which come with merely buying a large size.
I live in the US, and you can get maternity clothes just about anywhere. Macy's has them, Target, Walmart and KMart have them. Gap and Old Navy have them. And then there are specialty maternity stores, as well. I got most of mine in maternity stores. I feel proud and confident when I wear them, because I do not look like a huge cow - instead, I clearly only have a huge belly.
I did wear a bigger size for the first few months, and I did feel like a cow, but as soon as I was big enough I started with the maternity clothes, and now I feel much happier and more confident.
As for size. Don't buy too much too early. You buy whatever size you'd buy if you weren't pregnant, normally, but nobody can predict just how big you'll actually get. For now, just get a few tops and pants and skirts, just enough to get you through the next couple of months, and then add to your wardrobe as the seasons change and your belly gets bigger. That's what I'm doing, at least.
Oh, and if you can find them - there are pants that have cinches on the sides, so that you can tighten them early on, and loosen them as you grow. They are really great! Congrats, and good luck!

I was what people would describe as "all baby" both pregnancies. During my first pregnancy, I could get by with regular clothes (and I don't mean sweats, either, I'm talking office attire) all the way up until month 6. At that point, however, I couldn't see spending a lot of money for clothes I'd only be wearing for three more months, so I bought some cheap-o K-Mart garb that made me look and feel even frumpier and fatter than I ever thought possible. Not to mention the styles were hideous.
Hindsight being 20/20, I now know that cheaping out on pregnancy clothes was not a good decision. You know how it goes, if you don't feel comfortable and/or "yourself" in what you're wearing, you will certainly think you look bad, especially when raging hormones are involved. What a bummer when, what's supposed to be such a beautiful time for a woman, ends up being quite the opposite! Had I known about maternity clothing such as what's offered in the sites I list below, my first pregnancy experience would have been just that much better.
With my second, I went this route and I don't care what anyone says, it made a HUGE difference for me and was NOT a waste of money at all. If I have to suffer through the discomfort of getting my bladder kicked, being a stomach sleeper relegated to my sides and/or back, swollen ankles, lower back pain and persistant all-day-long sickness, then I at least oughta have something to wear that fits me physically AND mentally.
Do what feels good to you! This is a time you can be a little selfish, because remember, the next 18+ years your life will be revolving around someone(or two or three....) else!

PS-these sites also give very detailed sizing information as well as other resources you may find helpful. =)

For what it's worth, I do _not_ understand the "that's just for looks!" Uh, yeah. I suppose you could always buy garbage bags and cut in arm and neck holes. And "buy jogging suits!" Uh, no thanks. I do like leaving the house.
You buy your regular size. NB that it's hard to find maternity stuff that's cut well enough to actually be a "size 4" or "size 12" -- a lot of it is just S/M/L.
Second-hand stores are great. Try looking for children's (a few regular women's might have them as well) consignment stores in the Yellow Pages; they often have maternity sections. Goodwill, Value Village, etc, will have some jaw-droppingly hideous stuff, and a few great things at excellent prices.
Gap Maternity is about the best I can think of:

Beware of artificial fibres, and poor-quality construction at some of the more popular chain stores. If money isn't a problem and you're doing more besides slopping around the house, I don't think you want bigger sizes in normal clothes, or sweatsuits; neither are at all flattering. It's your middle that gets big, and, theoretically, that's it. Your shoulders don't expand; I'm not sure how you'd find a larger-size jacket that would fit over a bump but still fit well everywhere else. Pregnancy isn't obesity, and re. "you can wear them later" -- er, not if you're not planning on getting rotund. And, most maternity tops are cut longer to go over the bump, and hide the awful waistbands of most maternity pants.

Target has the best clothes for the best price. Babies R Us has some cute stuff as well. Even their jeans look cool. Stay away from pants that are "real waist" in the front, they don't stay up. I bought my regular size in everything, but at 8 months my clothes are starting not to fit.
I would get simple, solid color pieces that fit well, and spend your money on accessories - hair, jewelry and shoes - that way you won't spend to much. It feels like you will be pregnant forever, but I am almost done and wondering what I am going to do with all these clothes! Also, you are probably not going to really show until spring, so I would not buy too many cold weather pieces yet.
Take care and good luck!

Your going to want some actual maternity clothes. Buying big will work, but it's not going to be cut to fit flattering. I am 22 weeks and I hate wearing regular shirts. When I wear regular shirts I look fat. When I wear maternity shirts I look pregnant. I don't want to look fat. lol Also, you can save everything you buy to wear with future pregnancy's so you will get more use out of them.
Just buy your normal size. Everyone had really good suggestions on maternity stores but my favorite place to get maternity clothes is Target. They have some really cute stuff and are not as expensive as the maternity stores. Wal mart and K mart have some also at good prices, but their stuff doesn't seem to be as trendy.
Have fun shopping!

I don't know where you're located, so can't offer suggestions about places to go.
Wait till you can't fit into your current clothes before you run out to buy maternity wear. If there are particular pieces of clothing you treasure, don't wear them when your tummy gets big. I've got dresses stretched where my tummy used to be ! :)
Generally, maternity clothes makes allowances for your tummy's expansion.
Definitely worth buying a few garments so that you're comfortable as well as feeling good about the way you look.
Invest in a few simple pieces that can interchange. When I was pregnant I bought a couple of maternity singlets and tops, some skirts and pants.
Maternity bras will be a requirement as well, especially when your tummy gets bigger and starts impinging on your underwire bra. You'll also need a few if you intend on breastfeeding. Apparently the underwire bras inhibit the production of breast milk. I cannot wait until my daughter is weaned so I can wear a proper bra again ! :)

You've already got a lot of good answers about target, motherhood maternity, etc.
The only thing I can think to add is make sure you put slip-on shoes on your shopping list (they say laces get hard in the later months),
and also see if you can borrow any maternity clothes from sisters or friends who have been recently pregnant. Someone that you think has a cute style. My sister offered me a bunch of shirts that I'm totally excited to try out.

well, if you are petite size, you shouldn't have problem buying large or XL sizes in fancy fashion designs. I went to maternity store like motherhood etc and they said i look really small and buy regular clothes large sizes. They cut in big and so it won't help me. I am now 29 weeks. i went to the store when i was about in 3 months pregnant. Now i am in Asia and i wear only HangTen brand XL size and it's okay. so, if you are small, you can buy some brands that you like with big sizes. However, it is costly if you buy maternity clothing and you won't wear it in the future until you are planning to have another one soon. so, you should limit on buying clothes like these. Otherwise it will just sit in your closet for years and it will be a waste.
