im 20 weeks pregnant and absolutely cannot sleep. Earlier in the pregnancy the doctor was letting me take sominex but now that im farther along he advised me to no longer take it. I have tried everything but it seems like I sleep an average of 3 hours a night. What can i possibly do? I know it cant be healthy for me or the baby that i'm not getting adequate rest. I have a dr. appt tomorrow and I will ask him again what i can do. Have you had this problem? what did u do?

I started having this problem too around the same time. i am now 6 month gone and sleep a little better, but dotn manage to sleep late or early in the evening. Its as though your mind just wont switch off, no matter what you do, or how tired you are. I have been told that this is natures way or preparing you for the lack of sleep when the baby arrives. This is why you cant sleep, but its not the best thing especially when you are working in the morning, and have only had 2/3 hours sleep. Just try and relax before going to bed, by having a bath, warm drink, dont drink sugary stuff at all, and cozy up, the doctor should be able to give you something to take the edge of it. But if not, i think the best thing to do is get used to it.

Godo Luck

go to a health food store or get some melatonin. It will help you fall asleep- and it's completely harmless to you or the baby. (it's the same thing your body releases to get you to fall asleep).

Also its probably just your bodies way or preparing you for having a baby! You'll be lucky to be getting 3 hours straight sleep after she's born- Just rest when you can and get any sleep you can now. The farther along in pregnancy you get- the more uncomfy you get- and the more sleep deprevation becomes an issue- so you just need to sleep while you can now- because it doesn't go back to normal after the baby is born!

It is unwise to take drugs in the final trimester. Maybe your body does not need the amount of sleep you think it does.

Perhaps your afternoon naps are affecting your night sleep, you didn't mention them but if you are that is half the explanation.

Some methods recommended to my patients who have had similar problems is to soak their feet in warm water prior to retiring, use lavender oil or scent on the pillow. Do not drink coffee or tea or alcohol 4 hrs prior to retiring,
Adjust the pillows so that you are in a semi recumbent position rather than flat ( SR= laid back like in a car seat) Wear bed socks to bed and rub both feet with camphor oil before putting socks on.

If none of this works, then put aside times throughout the day to have cat naps so that over the 24 hrs you get at least 8 hrs rest.
Note I said rest not necessarily sleep.

Of course you don't want to bombard your baby with drugs...even if you can't fall asleep.

One of the ways to beat insomnia is to stop trying...By all means, drink a glass of warm milk (or eat some turkey; it's the tryptophan in both that works as a sleeping aid), but if I can't sleep, I'll get up, go do some dishes, read a chapter of a book, etc. When I get sleepy again, THEN I lie down and sleep comes.

One thing: Avoid TV like the plague, the jumping images will make it harder, not easier, for you to fall asleep.

Good luck to you!

The good news is that you're in your second trimester and you have extra energy to burn, which is why lots of women suffer from insomnia. The really good news is that once you reach your third trimester you will start to feel exhausted and sleep well (aswell as you can considering you're carrying a watermelon on your stomach). When I was younger I suffered from stress and insomnia and a friend of mine gave me a tape on relaxation. Basically, it's a person speaking to you, getting you to relax from your toes to your head. Honestly, I haven't heard it all the way through as I have always fallen asleep within minutes! It totally relaxes you. Contact a new age store and they will be able to hook you up. It really works.Good Luck.

Why dont you try taking a cup of horlicks up with you and a magazine to bed it may take a hour or so to get to sleep but you will fall asleep as your mind is not on trying to fall asleep and getting frustrated with your self. Even put on some calming music Reiki music will help you and baby sleep all night
