This can be illustrated with a simple experiment.
Take a piece of chalk and write few lines on the board. Change the pressure on the chalk for each line.
Try to erase them off later. The one where you applied a lot of pressure will be difficult to erase. There the thickness of the line depends on how much pressure you applied. Now map the above like this.
Lines -> Incidents in memory
Board -> Brain
Eraser -> Time
Our memory is similar to it. The ones we most think of or make the impression, will be remembered for a long time. Here the impression is dependent on how much happiness/sadness you experienced. The others will get faded away with time easily.

Interesting question.
First there is the difference between short and long term memory, for instance: try to remember 2 telephone numbers at the same time, you probably can't, since in short term memory only six or seven items can be "stored". After some exercise and repitition this telephone number will be stored into long term memory. Now the more often you are accessing this information, the easier it is to be retrieved. For instance: you probably know still a telephone number or address from when you were young, even though you haven't used that information for years.
Now why do you forget, I think there may be 2 reasons:
- The information has disappeared from your brain: the cells may have died off, or maybe somehow have been "overwritten" by new information
- The information is still there but is hardly accessible, the neural paths leading there haven't been used in a long time and kind of died out.

According to our capacity ,nature ,likes and dislikes and a number of other known and unknown causes,our habit of love,likes and dislikes for things develop and get embedded in our mind.As a result we have varied levels of interest for different things in life.Combined with this various motivational factors come into play . All the above play a vital role in our memory of events,things that happen , persons we meet in day today life.
We remember or forget according to the importance we attach to a particular person,thing or event.
Certain thing,event or people we met we remember if we recall them very often in our mind or else we tend to forget.
Constant and continuous recapitulation will makethe memory strong and we can remember things for long.
Also,it depends upon the deep impressions or childhood memories of pleasant or unpleasant nature that make us to remember or not.

certain, I keep in innovations 2 previous lives. both very particular. it isn't a lot a remembering, that is extra a sensation that i become honestly re-experiencing that diverse fragment of the previous existence lower back. All senses were very acute in the course of the adventure. I felt i become there in no unclear words. i might want to work out, contact, smell, experience sensations. experience warm, thirsty. i'd also experience each and every of the thoughts lower back in the course of the adventure that i must have felt the first time round. both my previous existence reports were the merely correct minutes of both those lives. One become no longer frightening even although i become in user-friendly words 14 when I died in an twist of destiny. It become thrilling because i might want to work out the female who were my mom in that existence status crying over my body. yet i become now no longer in my body, i become hovering above it. I succeeded in searching this position and travelling it. I even chanced on the nook keep the position our kinfolk had once lived approx 60 years in the past, because in the course of the adventure I were given names, places, tiny information, so i become able to music down the area. the second one existence I experienced i really can't communicate of. that is previous the geographical areas of probability that anybody might want to even remotely trust me and that i do not want to ask even extra ridicule than i'm probable to get already. i am going to easily say that i become no longer in human type. contained in the East reincarnation is without challenge widely used, yet no longer right here contained in the West, because it conflicts with Orthodox Christian beliefs. notwithstanding that is a imperative guiding theory in the final public of Indian non secular traditions which contain Hinduism and Jainism. also Kabbalah, and Gnostic and Esoteric Christianity. The Buddhist theory of Rebirth is somewhat diverse to the Hindu traditions, so perchance won't be able to be protected. some historic Greek philosophers observed it also. So i do not locate it an difficulty-free concept in any respect.

Some things are pleasurable while others have painful mmories. According to Freud, the mind keeps the painful memories in the uncoscius mind. They are not erased but are there only in the incoscius. Pleasurable memories are easy to recall because they are kep in the consious are the subconscious.

Awesome question! I think it has a lot to do with our personalities...some things we sub-consciously choose to remember and some we involuntarily choose to forget...
