as far as i know its legal as its a communal area it s aimed at you will see no more on camera than you would standing outside your door and they cant sue u for standing outside ur door, if however you had other front doors in focus it maybe an invasion you will need to ask your police station

The Data Protection Act does not apply to individuals putting up CCTV camera's themselves and the Human Rights Act only applies to the Public Sector and in certain cases/circumstances to companies.
There is no law that prevents you from putting up a CCTV Camera however, if you were to use it to film neighbours taking a shower or using a toilet, you could be guilty of other criminal offences. There is the possibility of a Breach of the Peace, Outraging Public decency and so forth.

I would say it's legal.
If the view from the camera is mainly aimed at your front door and the stairway just happens to be in the shot I can't see thta being a problem.
If it was aimed at someone's front windows, up or downsatirs, you would hit privacy laws.
Check it out with your local council, police or a solicitor, just in case. Better know now than after something happens.

What about the new X-Ray camera's - that are supposed to see through your clothing to check if you have any "weapons" - no joking...! ...
anyway...when I installed my CCTV - I asked the Community Police - if they could pop round and check it out for me... they told me - as long as it wasn't pointing at any of the neighbours Windows.. it would be OK! ... I would let your local nick know & inform the neighbours that you have installed it...keeps you right...incase anyone complains

People will complain and try and sue about anything nowadays, so many nimbys around. They may actually be thankful of it one day if something happens to them and is caught on your cctv! I would check with your local police station and citizens advice bureau, they should be able to clear matters up for you

I would think your neighbours would be grateful - you are helping their security and not charging them !
Stick up a notice - you can buy them anywhere - then nobody can say they weren't warned.
The police like people to have cctv - it makes their job easier.
