MLS is the system Realtors (only members of the National Association of Realtors) use to advertise their listings nationwide. Canada and U.S. are the only 2 I know of that are participants. Only Realtors can login to get specific information on listings but general info can be obtained by anyone on http://www.realtor.com/Default.asp?poe=realtor

In Canada MLS is a trademark of REALTOR® - Canadian Real Estate Association in contrast to the United States where MLS® is considered generic term and can't be branded (I believe it should be similarly in Canada). Actually the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver (REBGV) claims to have pioneered the first MLS® in Canada.
On website realtor.ca you can find limited details about listed objects to contact a realtor for more information.

I am not 100% sure, but I believe you have to be a licensed Real Estate Agent or Broker to be able to use this service. It is a listing of all properties available for sale/lease in a particular area. I only know of its availability by agents in the US, but makes sense that is is probobly used in other countries as well. I know not much help, but its all I know.
