Non-aerosol air freshener? An old (dating back hundreds of years), but very nice one is known as a pomander. Use an orange and cloves. Carefully press whole cloves (stem first) into the peel of a whole orange, placing them no more than a 1/2" to 3/4 inch apart around the entire orange. You can also experiment making designs (hearts, flowers, frame your name, whatever) with the cloves.
Next, tie string or yarn around it in two directions (so it looks quartered by the string) and hang it where it can air dry for a week or two (maybe more in humid climates). Do NOT just set it on the counter - it must have free air circulation while drying or it will get 'mushy'.
Once it's dry, you can hang it anywhere, or place it in a linen closet, dresser drawer, or anywhere else. In large and open areas, one is not very effective, since the aroma dissipates with air volume. However, it is completely natural and will last many years.
The cloves help prevent molds from forming on the orange, and the combined scents are very pleasing.
