I am interested in taking some fencing lessons (well, actually, to begin during the summer - just as a sport) but I don't know how to convince my parents that it is worth starting. Any ideas?

Note: Next year I am taking a gap year (between school and uni) and I will probably be working so I will be able to pay anything I require. :D

You are young and presumably fit. There is no reason why you should not take fencing lessons, except perhaps for the financial outlay which is substantial as you need specialised equipment and clothing and lessons are not cheap.
It is an excellent hobby which will keep you in trim. It also is a noble sport that goes back to the days of chivalry, with strict conventions and excellent discipline. It is character forming and an excellent mental exercise as you have to exercise judgement, patience, and courtesy. I hope these arguments are helpful to convince your parents.

The assumption that you can't teach an old dog new tricks is completely WRONG. Some people may seem to pick up a new skill quicker than others, but this is based on their attitudes and their previous experiences. We all have the ability to do anything we set our mind to, any skill that one human being can learn to do can also be mastered by anyone else.
Ultimately the main determining factor is PRACTICE. If you practice a skill for 10000 hours you will become a maestro, if you can't manage that much practice you can become good at something on less. It doesn't matter how old you are, it's just that children have a different attitude towards learning. They do more and think less. If we can put aside our hangups and learn to enjoy ourselves, then anything is possible. Good luck on your adventure!

It's never too late to learn something new - you will learn a new skill, meet new friends & also be keeping fit. If your parents are paying for the equipment though you may need to convince them that you are going to stick at it & not pack up after a couple of months as that would be a waste of money. I would reccomend finding a local club & asking if you can go for a few weeks to get a feel for it - I'm sure they would have spare equipment for you to use. If you do it & you like it then ask them to buy your own stuff for your bday or something.

It's never too late to learn something new. As you get older you'll discover that you're going to be constantly learning new things. As far as convincing the parents, just explain to them that it will help you to be a well rounded person. Good luck.

1) When you are dead, it will be too late to start something new.
2) Easy - show your passion for your new interest by "practising" fencing around the house, using a toy sword/ scredriver/ curtain pole/whatever comes to hand to swashbuckle random household items (e.g. furniture, t.v, sibblings). A few days of total domestic carnage should convince them they'd be better off paying the club fees and getting you out of the house...

No is the answer to your question.
Say you had started fencing two or three years ago then obviosuly you would have gained more experience/practice. Having said that, you've gotta look forward in life, so go for it mate.

There are 80 year olds doing university degrees, so I really don't think they think it's ever too late to learn something new.

No; my son took up judo at the age of 15 and by the age of 19 had got his brown belt.
