its all due to the dew point in the air. When the dust in the atmosphere comes into contact with water vapour, the w/v settles on the dust in extreemly small quantities, but builds as the dew point increases. This eventually turns to clouds, the dirtier the air the greyer the cloud, but this is not always the case, more w/v in the air turns the clouds darker also. There are lots of reasons why clouds appear, uprising thermals, low pressure, high pressure all help to distinguish different clouds and colours. Also the light can affect the colours too. A wonderful subject but you can write books after books just on cloud formation.

When clouds cover the sky on daytime they really look more or less grey. It is obvious that they act like grey filters in microscopes or cameras: they partly reflect, partly absorb the wide scale of the sun's wavelenghts without changing the balance between colours. This results "sunshine" with lower intensity.

The water droplets in white fluffy clouds are small, so light can diffuse through them. As the water droplets get bigger, the clouds become opaque and they look grey from below.

they're not. all clouds are white. the thickness of some clouds obscures the sun light and makes them appair to be dark
