I think it was a smart move to handle them that way. The truth is independance isn't always what it is cracked up to be. England is not the same as it was many years ago. I noticed that England also given Aussie the right to chose it's coarse as a nation of whom the majority of the people are loyal to the English. I'm a American and my favorite country other than the USA is England. The English political agenda has made atleast one friend here...

Seems like they decided to let a lot of territories they occupied become independent,like Hong Kong and the islands out their by the Bahama's.Maybe they just flat out couldn't afford taking care of all those countries problems especially since they have a lot of their own .Just like us.

britain was too weak economically and militarly after being whooped by the germans in WW2 so unrest in the colonies was too much to bear to control the asian colonies so britain grantyed most of its major colonies independence

after the war the british
- too weak to govern or sustain colonial countries such as malaysia & india.
- dont have the money to sustain government officers in both countries.
- dont want these two countries fall into civil war

unrest in the population domestic and foreign, and the biggest factor was cost. It's always about money in the end.
