Mercury (Hg) is used in some thermometers because it is 13 times heavier than water. Mercury is classified as a metal. Most fluid thermometers have a very thin vein of fluid that expands with heat or contracts with cold. A Mercury thermometer needs to be at least one meter long and capable of supporting the weight of a column of Mercury in a sealed glass tube, above which a perfect vacuum exists. When the column of Mercury is warmed, it expands and fills some of the vacuum space above the column. A thermometer using H2O (water) as a temperature indicator would need to be about 40 feet tall.

Mercury is used in glass thermometers because mercury is sensitive to changes in temperature. It can take extreme temperatures. A mercury thermometer can be easily identified by the presence of silver liquid. The silver liquid helps make reading the temperature easy

Mercury is better than alcohol in thermometers where higher temperatures are required. Alcohol is no good over about 110C while mercury can do over 300C. However, there are digital thermometers you can use instead.
