You don't need to see a specialist (GYN). When you are physically developed enough to warrant a pelvic exam, Pap smear, etc. your family doctor will inform you and do those examinations and tests.

I hope your mom is arranging for you to have a physical examination with your family doctor every year. At your next physical, ask your doctor how soon he/she thinks you need a pelvic exam.

If you have abnormal reproductive symptoms (like extreme menstrual pain, very heavy peroids, irregular periods, or you've not gotten any periods and you think you should have) then you might refer yourself directly to a GYN. But it is still OK to start with your family doctor.

It has nothing to do with being sexually active. If you have started your menstrual period, you need an exam pretty soon. They make sure everything is healthy and developing properly, as well as check for cancer or infections. Not all infections or problems that develop down there are sex related either.

My gynecologist suggests girls go within the first 2 years of starting their menstrual periods. It is uncomfortable and can be embarrassing, but you need those check-ups the same as from your other doctors.

Your mom may not know how to bring it up, or she may not realize that you are growing up so fast. You should talk to her about it. She could ask her doctor when she should make you an appointment. She can also answer a lot of your questions. I know it's not easy to talk to your mom about these things, but she is a woman too and went through the same things you are going through now.

usually once you become sexually active you then start to have pap smear tests done or you may have to see them if you have irregular or heavy periods, don't worry i doubt you'll see one for quite while yet and even when you do its nothing to worry about
