The direction of evolution in most physical sense is refinement both in form and function; but from the point of view of human mind and its capacities physical world is all but a constant source of petty concerns, reasons for self-inflicting torture. This is not merely a view due to growing trends in physical enhancement by surgical or artificial means, not even in terms of genetic engineering, and birth of not so impractical notions of designer babies, there is far better things in human mind that it would like to evolve onto.

The mind has already started to see physical constructs of the universe, including limitations of time and space, as potential barriers in the way of its ambitious expansion and free exploration of all that can be imagined; human body that in essence is a child of our physical reality and therefore is subjected to fluctuations and demarcations in time a space is also being viewed by the mind as a major handicap. For centuries human mind has aspired to have out of body experience, to venture out into other dimensions possible, to experience state of timelessness, to be at many places at once, to live forever and forever young.

The fullest capacities of an evolving human mind have so far been just inspirational, or inspirational for our best, having only mystical, spiritual or at best para-psychological interpretations. But in the future this will become real science, as the science of today will develop through many not only evolutionary but also revolutionary phases. Our capability of leaving earth below and to rise into space is the first step, but what does this mean? Is it just symbolic of what human mind aspires to achieve in the future and eventually is capable of achieving - a pure being on its heavenly quest through all times and places to reach out and meet the absolute truth in existence – the Creator. Physical reality, like the Earth viewed from afar would then, will be only an original dimension that cradle for human mind but once.

There are many theories as to where Evolution is going, and in terms of science, evolution can be seen on a daily basis. Imagine, 100 years ago, the car was invented, but about 75 years ago, the airplane was invented. 50 years ago, we landed on the moon (supposedly), and twenty years ago, the Internet was being created, and, unknowingly, it would become the biggest source of communication since the phone. Our technology is getting more and more advanced and is evolving so fast, eventually we will be able to see it from generation to generation.
As far as the biological aspect of evolution for mankind, there are several different theories; many people believe we will be shorter (about five feet at the most) and have larger noses, and our hair will be all but a memory. Why? Because taller people tend to have shorter life spans, I'm not too sure about the noses, and hair is useless because we have synthetics to keep us warm. We are also going to have pot-bellies, the same skin tones, a better sense of sight, and longer arms supposedly. However, these are just some theories that were drudged up from high school (it's okay, I was educated in Connecticut, where teaching evolution is not frowned upon... you know, the whole "teaching science" thing is still okay here).

That is very difficult to answer as evolution is opportunity driven. I.E. if there is an available food source then some creature will evolve to exploit it given time. the current situation is that humans have evolved so far that they can adapt themselves or their environment to take advantage of any available food source. So as a species we will not evolve physically because we have no need but we may evolve mentally. Of course the so called micro-evolution is going on all the time so it could be possible that in the future a super bug may evolve that kills off 90% of the human population and then the surviving 10% will have evolved into a human species capable of withstanding that particular bug.
It is a fascinating subject and we are still finding out more and more about it. Both in the processes that have happened in the past and what can happen in the future. There is a group of people who we call creationists who for some reasons shut their minds to the mass of evidence about the evolutionary process and who leaders will tell all sorts of lies to keep them on board. "there is not evidence of linking species" is one which is totally untrue as there is a mass of such evidence.

Evolution doesn't really have a direction - that's not how it works. In fact, 'survival of the fittest' is a bit of a misnomer. It's not survival that changes organisms, but rather fitness to reproduce. Genes cannot be passed if an organism (or indeed a species) doesn't reproduce.

This is why apparently negative features for survival, such as the peacocks enormously ornate (and awkward) tail, become prevalent - because females choose males with large and colourful tails, the trait survives and flourishes. (The large tail may well indicate health and fitness - if a male can survive with such an apparent disadvantage, he must have good genes. Possibly).

So evolution is not a directional thing. It just is - so called 'lower' creatures (such as marsupials) still survive because they 'fit' for their environment, and they reproduce. One creature doesn't 'evolve' into another.

Interesting question friend!
I am not sure but I feel evolution is like seasons.. summer, rainy, winter, again the whole cycle.. it goes on and on... We have to take advantage of all the seasons.

Similarly the soul is born as an insect.. it evolvs and the soul becomes a bird in next life, it evolvs further and the soul goes in the body of an elephant/dog.. it learns a lesson each time and keeps evolving. I have heard the human form is the supreme..

When the mind evolvs further the desire to be born in the body of a human / animal fades... what is the next form after human body is not known to us... aim for it and you will know the secret.

The direction of evolution (from the scientific point of view) is not appointed, it is impossible to know what or who will evolve in the future, but when you look backwards you see the pathway (or many bifurcated pathways) of evolution and perhaps extrapolate, that "direction" of evolution is to fill every possible niche with life.

Evolution proceeds invariably towards Extinction.

Forward. We cannot go backward in terms of evolution. To evolve is to change, move forward.
