I'm going for an international oratory competition and my topic is beauty. The essence of my piece is this. Beautiful people are given more oppurtunities and are -frankly- loved more than the mediocre-looking. Why is this so? Are our genetics to be blamed for our physical flaws? Isn't the maxim "Beauty is only skin deep" true?

I need points supporting this statement, and ideas on why beauty plays such an important role in society, so much so that we are willing to spend thousands on plastic surgery to beautify ourselves, because we think we arent good enough to survive.

Beauty is important, yes that IS true, but why is it given the utmost importance now, in a crucial time in history?

Please give me your views on this matter, anything with class, style, quality and excellence will be duly appreciated. Thank you all so much for your help.

Yes, "Beauty is only skin deep" is very true.
I look past peoples looks, I look at peoples qualities, what they have accomplished, their compassion, their respect for other people. I have met very beautiful people and they have the personality of a rock, or they are very mean. They get away with things simply because they are "beautiful" It's sad because our society emphasizes outward beauty and not inward beauty. Outward beauty fades, unless you have alot of money to maintain that beauty. Inward beauty grows.
I have taught my son and daughter, to look past a books cover. The cover may be appealing and very pretty, but what does it have inside?
These are just my thoughts and feelings.
Good luck with the competition.

People naturally aspire to be more than they are, richer, happier, stronger and prettier and more handsome fall right in with that. What defines beauty is a good question. I think its the media and film culture driving the beauty we desire today.
Its a scale from unattractive to beautiful (1-100) Something high on the scale is desired by more people than something lower on the scale.
Fortunately the beauty of a thing or person is not equivalent to the joy or contentment it provides so we can all be equally satisfied in spite of most of us being mediocre.

Ostracization of the mediocre? Nah! Not around here. Things are mediocre, and I'm ostracized because I am different. But you are right about beautiful people. They are given more opportunities. It seems (especially to those of us on the outside of "the box") that the unimportant is more important than important. Individuality above connectedness. Popularity above intelligence. Fake over real.

Beauty is truth and yes truth is beauty. One must consider and examine and define beauty before pondering your questions. I think you have narrowly defined it as to exterior appearances.
Also do not forget the maxim that beauty IS in the eye of the beholder, therefore subjective criteria enter the picture. I love Picasso's work yet I know many people who hate it.
When it comes to people, indeed beauty is important for the mediocre to survive and do well. In a meritocratic, competitive world like ours, true talent will distinguish itself regardless of external "beauty" and ultimately defines it, in other words it becomes beauty itself.
Hope it helps.
