It's 15 degrees below zero, snowing and icy enough to slip. I decided to artsy up an old book case because I need a place for school books... While I do have black spray paint I decided the weather was too horrible to stand in the snow spraying for a good ten minutes.. sooo.. I did something amazingly stupid... I used black oil paint (for canvas') to cover the book case. The book case is made of the same material as most cheap office furniture that comes in a box and you have to assemble.. you know ply wood with a paper covering. Now the oil paint has been on for about an hour and is still rubbing off with even the slightest touch. My question is.... How long, if at all, with it take before the oil paint is dry and the bookcase is ready to use?
The bookcase is small and more for decorative use and I've given it a fabric lining which means I don't care if the paint isn't very durable. I just want to be able sit it on the floor without a big black ring. Thank you so much!

I'm sorry to say, wherever you place it on the floor, there will be a ring.
It's because of friction(rubbing) and the weight of the bookcase pressing on the floor or the books pressing into the shelf.
If the paint dries and you like it, put a coat of polyeurathane(spelling probably wrong) over it and let IT dry before using it. It comes in flat or glossy depending on what you want. Ask at the store what kind to use over the oil paint. I'm guessing oil based. That just means you need mineral spirits to clean instead of
water.
If it doesn't dry, scrape off what you can and try taking a hair dryer to it and dry again. If it dries fairly well you can sand it but if its wet it'll eat you sandpaper.
Hope I helped.

oil paint can take days to dry on canvas. so on a hard surface i would say at least a week or two. you might want to take the paint off the best you can if you have some kind of oil base it should come easy

Depending on environmental conditons, humidity, temperature, etc. oil based paint can take as short as a couple of hours to dry to a couple of days. A fair rule-of-thumb would be to consider at least 24 hours before rubbing the surface. Even if it is not tacky it my be damaged. One problem I have had with oil based paints is that on humid days it tends to get sticky again..

Oil Paint, leave it for over night.

Should dry in about 8 hours, some thick areas, like drip drops takes about day to completely dry.
