I, personally, wouldn't "upgrade" to Vista - it's mainly just eye candy, bloat, and you have less rights to have any and all files on your computer. See Digital Rights Management for more info.
Keep XP... dabble with open source programs - Firefox, OpenOffice, Thunderbird (they're great!). Maybe even consider looking into Linux (It's not as scary or hard as you think)
Firefox - http://getfirefox.com/ (a must have!)
OpenOffice - http://openoffice.org/
Thunderbird - http://getthunderbird.com/
Ubuntu (Easy to use Linux) - http://ubuntu.com/

i will decline. Vista grew to become into no longer helpful in terms of satisfied customers and makes use of up an incredible quantity of components and has severe standards. I artwork at a employer with a hundred desktops and we are nonetheless on homestead windows XP and plan on being on XP for a protracted time, a minimum of till the recent homestead windows 7 is out, and not Vista. Vista has been refuted to have bugs, regularly for companies because of the networking themes. Vista house is probable a secure guess for you as that's the main solid of the Vista structures. So in case you do want to enhance, Vista homestead could do you superb, except you're making plans on appearing some networking stuff. yet I additionally say protecting homestead windows XP (that works large) isn't a bad thought the two.

Service Pack 3 or SP3 for Windows XP will be arriving later this year. I assume SP3 will just have the security features of Windows Vista without the aero look.
Meaning, instead of buying Vista maybe you can just wait for SP3.
For those of you who plan on installing Vista on an existing PC, here is how I can save you some big bucks.
Pass this info on to anyone who you think is going to buy Windows Vista.
The OEM versions come from companies like Dell, Gateway, Compaq/HP, Toshiba, etc.
The retail versions are what you would buy from Office Depot, OfficeMax, CompUSA, Best Buy, etc.
The OEM version costs 50% less than the retail version.
You also don't get a manual or tech support from Microsoft with the OEM version but who cares.
Here is another tip, the only version of Windows Vista that I think is worth buying is the 32 bit Home Premium OEM version.
Vista Home Basic doesn't offer anything in my opinion.
Vista Business doesn't offer enough of what I would want.
The Ultimate version costs too much. Even the OEM version of Windows Vista Ultimate costs too much.
Microsoft says that you can only install the OEM version on one PC. I don't know what their rule is concerning this.
