This week the press are having fun highlighting "the blunders" of the Home Office and blaming John Reid. But all the previous New and Old Labour Home Secretaries have made worse blunders (remember Straw, Blunket and Clarke) and indeed so have previous Tory Home Secretaries, all of who have proved equally inept & unable to find out what mistakes the civil servants in HO are making nor correct nor prevent these mistakes re-occuring. But do we not all know that our own mistakes can be found and corrected, such as by doing a spell check before we send off our E Mail applying for a new job etc. Computers can beat any human in the world in brain games like chess provided it is programmed by an expert. So why not recruit somebody like Bill Gates or Yahoo's top programmer to program a super computer that will totally take over the function of Home Secretary from human control and will detect, investigate, correct and prevent all "mistakes" through its ability to access all data
worldwide?

As Asker rightly states all recent Home Secretaries from both Labour and Conservative governments have often made blunders, so this is not just about John Reid but about the ability of humans in general to adequately fulfill the office. To be fair Reid does seem to be a victim of staff inefficiency and organisational incompetence within his department as indeed have many previous Home Secretaries. The idea of a computer taking over the role of government instead of a human has long been popular is science fiction, but has never actually happened in real life, and clearly the programming of such a super computer would be crucial. Perhaps yahoo's top programmer would indeed be able to devise such a super computer? the main issue seems to be all humans make mistakes and take a very long time to think, analyse and address problems. Computers are not so limited in their capabilities. Worth looking into/?

If this Government hadn't politicised the Civil Service, created endless new laws, imposed the Human Rights Act with its contradictions to existing British immigration law, and generally meddled in the running of the Home Office department; then it would at least have remained at the level of inefficiency that we normally find in the public sector. Instead, we have a COMPLETE shambles.

By personalising the current imbroglio in the Home Office around Dr. Reid, one tends to overlook the fact that it is ten years of Labour Government that we should be challenging, including previous Home Secretaries spawned by this administration.

By drawing a line under earlier New Labour inefficiecy in running the Department, Dr. Reid seeks to distance his party from the shambles he has found and, at the same time, seeks to buy time for himself and his party to sort things out.

The proposal to divide the department into two seperate divisions, again, buys time, because he will argue that on his own behalf, and that of his party, he must be given two years to sort things out. That will take us nicely beyond the next election, and, as far as immigration controls are concerned, will be too late.

It is worth adding, that Politicians are not trained to run anything, let alone complex departments that should have been left to the trained staff of the Civil Service.

Although I have elluded to the standard of efficiecy one often finds within the Public Sector, in this case, the main problem was a complete lack of will regarding border control, as well as political interference which eventually caused systems to break down.

These politicians are "out of touch" with the ordinary people.
They receive a salary and benefits which was probably beyond their wildest dreams before entering the labour party, they accept responsibilities which they are incapable of fulfilling due to never having "real" jobs or mixing with normal people since they gained M.P status.
If Reid was an honest man and cared about his party policies he would resign saying he was incapable of running the Home Office, of course this will never happen as he along with most of the rest of them are hanging onto the gravy train for dear life.

Why not go into the petitions web site at no10 and start a petition for Reid to resign.
Bill Gates would get my vote.

If John Reid wore clothes that mirrored how 'hard' & 'tough' he was it would be a pink lacy dress with frilly petticoat's. After his famous 'heads will roll' remarks after first taking the job at the HO, not one civil servant was sacked or moved. The man is an imbecile and why the British population cannot see this is due to the massive tax-payer funded New Labour spin machine.

guy you have some beef. seem for each reason there is an effect. I agree giving the immigrants money won't help it is going to easily motivate greater immigration to get the loose money. no rely what immigrants are right here to stay because of the fact of a situation of a extensive hollow between the wealthy and the poor. the wealthy countries alongside with your usa secretly help dictators so as that your government and the dictators are the only entities that earnings from the precious components in the "poor countries" the real recipients do no longer earnings and thank you to frustration and desperation get away to "greener pastures" so vote for a central authority it quite is extremely for the reason of assuaging poverty then you quite can start up complaining. otherwise i will assure immigration is perpetually and ever and as nicely your a beneficiary of misdeeds( unlawful circulate of wealth) that have forced immigrants to return on your usa

Divide Reid in two would be more apt. He`s just another free loading, talentless nobody, bullshitting a living at the expense of others. How these life-long "unskilled" labour tosspots justify their extortionate salaries and high positions are enigmas beyond my comprehension. Boot em into touch.
