Yes. A daily scan scheduled for when you first turn on your computer picks up any threats in your system. I have just transferred a file from an old floppy disc from work (5 years old) and AVG has picked up an old virus on that and put it in the vault. You then have the option of emptying the vault. However, it may delete the whole file so make sure that it is something that you can afford to lose.

It will go after any and all in it's dictionary. Even if they were there before you installed it. But the problem is it isn't really the best. It just like Norton and McAffee just don't get enough. I use PCTools anti-virus. It seems to get all not just some. But I will say that AVG is better than Norton and McAffee.

You can run a complete scan to get rid of existing virus. By default the antivirus program scans for every file you open for virus and removes them if found.
