because it creates a layer between the two objects and each object is moving against that layer of matter and not each other.

causes- two objects rubbing on each other(also causes heat)
energy used- viscosity, but over time the lubricant breaks down
reduce friction- by creating a lubricating layer (which reduces heat) between the 2 rubbing objects

Generally friction is the phenomenon by virtue of which one surface tends to oppose the movement of another surface over it.The reason for friction is very obvious..if we notice at microscopic level we find the surfaces are not smooth and hence they cause interlocking with other surfaces when placed over it.
when we use lubricants they fill the rough surface gaps and form a layer which prevents interlocking.
Hence using lubricants lessens friction...

friction is caused by irregularities in texture, the more textural details there is the rougher it gets, and the rougher it gets the more friction occurs.

it usually needs more force for an object to move when there is friction. a wooden block weighting 1kg might not slide down a plank as rough as sandpaper with 45 degress inclination, while
a wooden block weighting 1kg will slide down the same plank if it's smooth as silk.

lubrication works by covering the objects microabrasions or other burrs and inconsistencies in the objects' texture.

Friction is caused by the welds the naturally occur between two objects that are touching each other. the long chain molecules in lubricants slide easily opon each other and stop these welds from occuring by holding the two objects from actually touching eachother!
